GUTTER PROTECTION SYSTEMS

A clogged gutter is like having no gutter at all. Gutters should be kept free of leaves and other debris so they don’t clog and overflow and cause damage to the exterior of your home as well as to the foundation.

To avoid these problems a homeowner must make sure to clean gutters and downspouts at least twice a year. Installing a gutter protection system that filters leaves and debris from the water is a great solution for the homeowner who wants a break from the tedious job of cleaning.

There are several types of gutter protection systems such as:

Leaf screens or mesh

These metal coverings fit inside against the back of the gutter and across the top. They act like a strainer and filter out the leaves and debris, allowing only water to run through your gutters and out the downspout. They still may require a periodic cleaning because debris can build up on top of the screens.

Solid cover with side slots

This type of gutter guard relies on the principle of "water adhesion". The water enters the gutter through slots or small holes located underneath a lip or on the vertical side. The leaves and other large debris fall over the edge to the ground. Any tiny debris that remains in the water just flows through the gutter and out the downspout. The natural surface tension of water causes it to cling to the guard edge and flow into the slots.

Gutter guards that snap-in

Made of vinyl or aluminum, these solid gutter covers snap onto the top front of the gutter and slip under your shingles. It can be beneficial to install these gutter guards when you are installing a new roof so as not to disturb the existing roofline. There are also gutter guards available that rest on top of the roof shingles but this type may blow off in high wind conditions.

Price

The prices can range from $7 to $22 per lineal foot depending on the options. Some may work well; others may not. The best way to check out a system is to get a list of satisfied customers and ask them their opinion.
